NewsBreaks CPSC Actions In The News In conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the following manufacturers have issued voluntary recalls for certain consumer electrical and electronic products. Here are the details: Microwave Ovens: Petters Consumer Brands of Minnetonka, MN has recalled about 300 Sunbeam-brand over-therange microwave ovens manufactured in China. The company says that internal electrical arcing in the microwave can pose a fire hazard to consumers. Petters notes that it has received no reports of injuries or incidents associated with the recalled microwaves, but is taking action now to prevent future incidents. The microwaves were sold with mobile homes from February through March 2007. Coffeemakers: Atico International USA of Fort Lauderdale, FL is recalling about 392,000 12-cup coffee makers manufactured in China. Atico says that the coffeemaker can ignite due to an electrical failure and pose a fire hazard. The company has received 14 reports of electrical failures, including six reports in which the coffeemaker has ignited and caused minor property damage. The recalled coffeemakers were sold in Walgreens stores nationwide from August 2003 through December 2006 for between $10 and $16. Power Tool Batteries: Milwaukee Electric Tool Company of Brookfield, WI has announced the recall of about 1 million battery packs used to power electric drills, saws, radios, flashlights, and wrenches. According to the company, if a vent on the battery cell is damaged or compromised during use, the battery can explode and pose a laceration hazard to consumers. Milwaukee Electric Tool has received 35 reports of incidents, including 11 injuries from battery packs exploding while in use. The battery packs were sold through home centers, hardware stores, industrial distributors, and 72 Conformity oCtober 2007 vehicle service distributors nationwide from July 1999 through 2005. Flashlights: Sportsman’s Warehouse of Midvale, UT has recalled about 4400 xenon aluminum flashlights manufactured in China. The company says that the batteries packaged with the flashlights are labeled as “Panasonic CR123A Industrial Lithium,” but have been determined to be counterfeit, and that they can overheat and rupture, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers. Sportsman’s Warehouse has received two reports of batteries overheating and flashlights igniting, with one consumer receiving burns to his hands. The recalled flashlights were sold at Sportsman’s Warehouse stores nationwide from October 2006 through May 2007 for between $30 and $40. Carbonated Beverage Dispensers: Finally, IMI Cornelius of Osseo, MN has recalled about 8000 of its frozen carbonated drink dispensers. According to the company, a problem with the dispenser’s florescent lamp can cause electrical arcing, which poses a fire hazard to consumers. IMI Cornelius has received five reports of smoldering or fire involving the dispenser’s florescent lamp, but no reports of injuries or property damage. The recalled dispensers were sold to fastfood restaurants, discount department stores, movie theaters and convenience stores nationwide from November 2001 through June 2007 for between $6000 and $12,000, depending on the dispenser configuration.
