Conformity Magazine - December 2007 - (Page 11) NewsBreaks Our readers can view the complete text of the FDA’s updated standards list as published in the Federal Register at www.conformity.com/1211. The table identifies 25 separate categories of consumer products, including thermometers, light bulbs, batteries and electronic appliances, and offers additional information on the risk of spills, and how to safety dispose of mercury-containing products. The EPA also provides links to several separate web sites that provide consumers with a list of non-mercury alternative products. Our readers can view the EPA’s table at the agency’s web site at www.conformity.com/1213. According to a translated report from the Xinhau News Agency, the three centers, operating under the supervision of the MII, will be responsible for “testing electronic products, as well as conducting research on standards, energy saving, product recycling and disposal.” Further, the centers will “implement the government’s Management Methods for Controlling Pollution by Electronic Information Products.” China’s RoHS regulations were implemented earlier this year, with the intent of reducing or eliminating certain toxic and/or hazardous substances from electrical and electronic products. Further regulations in this area are anticipated. FDA Issues Guidance Document for Cabinet X-Ray Systems The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a guidance document that offers compliance guidelines for cabinet x-ray systems. Cabinet x-ray systems (also referred to as closed x-ray systems) include an x-ray tube installed within an enclosure intended to contain the item being examined and to shield operators and other persons. Cabinet x-ray systems are primarily used for security screening, such as for carry-on baggage at airports, and in industrial quality control applications. In medical applications, cabinet x-ray systems are also used to view tissue samples. Guidance documents are intended to provide manufacturers with the agency’s current thinking on specific topics. However, guidance documents are not legally binding on the FDA, and are not a substitute for existing FDA regulations. Our readers can view the complete text of the guidance document on cabinet x-ray systems at www.conformity.com/ 1212.
