Conformity Magazine - December 2007 - (Page 56) NewsBreaks U.S., China Continue Efforts to Improve Toy Safety The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and China’s General Administration for Quality, Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) have reached an agreement aimed at eliminating the use of lead paint in children’s toys manufactured in China. In a recent “Consumer Product Safety Summit” held in Washington, D.C., the two national product safety agencies also announced plans for further cooperation in ensuring the safety of products in other categories, including electrical products. Further, the AQSIQ agreed to increase their inspection of consumer products destined for export to the United States, and to assist the CPSC in investigating unsafe consumer products found to have originated in China. As we’ve previously reported (see Conformity, September 2007), the United States and China signed a Memorandum of Understanding earlier this year, which included a “Plan of Action for Cooperation” to reduce the number of unsafe consumer products imported into the U.S. from China. Our readers can view the complete text of the CPSC’s press release on its agreement with the AQSIQ at www.conformity.com/1216. The research investigated whether wireless technology used to signal smoke alarms for earlier fire detection of appliance-based fires could be used to decrease the detection time of a fire, and included “proof of concept” testing by incorporating flame detection and wireless smoke/fire alarm technology into a home toaster oven. The report, which documents a study undertaking by the Naval Technology Center for Safety and Survivability on behalf of the CPSC, may have implications for smoke alarms and other warning devices that communicate wirelessly with in-home security systems. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has amended its regulations to adopt a recently revised safety standard for residential garage door operators. As we’ve previously reported (see Conformity, July 2006), the CPSC requested in 2005 that Underwriters Laboratories revise portions of UL 325, “Standard for Safety for Door, Drapery, Gate, Louver, and Window Operators and Systems.” The CPSC request came in the wake of several reports of children Product Reviews Preamplifiers and High Frequency Low-loss Cables A.H. Systems has both preamplifiers and high-frequency low-loss cables to match all antennas to 2, 4, 7, 18, 26.5 and 40 GHz. Each preamplifier is supplied with a DC regulated power source. A low-voltage indicator confidently allows you to power the preamplifier with your own external battery. Our high-frequency low-loss cables are an excellent choice over the standard cable types. With improved power handling, low VSWR, and high frequency capabilities, the low-loss cables can be made to your specified length. A.H. Systems, Inc.
