Conformity Magazine - December 2008 - (Page 48) NewsBreaks and electronic products. Here are the details: Notebook Computers: Sony Electronics, Inc. of San Diego, CA is recalling about 73,000 of its VAIO TZseries notebook computers. Sony says that irregularly positioned wires near the computer’s hinge and/or a dislodged screw inside the hinge can cause a short circuit and overheating, posing a burn hazard to consumers. The company has received 15 reports of overheating, including one report of a consumer who suffered a minor burn. The recalled notebook computers were sold through SonyStyle stores and the Sony website, as well as through authorized electronics retailers and dealers nationwide from July 2007 through August 2008 for between $1700 and $4000. Toasters: Wal-Mart Stores Inc. of Bentonville, AK has recalled about 210,000 General Electric-brand toasters manufactured in China. The company says that an electrical short circuit can occur between the heating element and the bread cage, posing a fire and electrical shock hazard to consumers. Wal-Mart has received 140 reports of fires or sparks coming from the toasters, or of the toasters tripping the circuit breaker in consumers’ homes, but no reports of injuries. The recalled toasters were sold at Wal-Mart stores nationwide from September 2007 through July 2008 for between $17 and $28. Cordless Screwdrivers: Menards of Eau Claire, WI has recalled about 42,000 MasterForce-brand cordless screwdrivers manufactured in China. Menards reports that the screwdriver’s lithium battery has no protective device to prevent overheating, and can pose a fire and burn hazard to consumers when being charged. The company has received three reports of fires, and two reports of consumer injuries, associated with the product. The recalled cordless screwdrivers were sold in Menards stores from April 2007 through May 2008 for about $30. Remote-Controlled Toy Helicopters: Ashley Collection, Inc. of New York, NY is recalling about 78,000 Protocol8 Conformity DeCember 2008 brand remote-controlled mini helicopter toys manufactured in China. The company says that the rechargeable battery inside the helicopter can overheat, resulting in the melting of the helicopter body, and posing a risk of fires or burns to consumers. Ashley Collections says that it has received nine reports of the helicopter overheating, including one minor injury. The recalled toy helicopters were sold through retail stores nationwide from October 2007 through December 2007 for between $30 and $50. Counterfeit Power Cords: Finally, DCI LLC of Olive Branch, MS has announced the recall of about 180 power cords manufactured in China. DCI reports that the recalled power cords are significantly undersized, and allow incorrect insertion of the power cord, posing a risk of fire and/or shock to consumers. The company has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the power cords, but has initiated the recall to prevent future incidents. The recalled power cords were sold on eBay.com from November 2006 through April 2008 for between $2 and $5.
