executive p r o f il e Hewlett Packard’s Move to Mobility: Top-Down Workplace Transformation Integral to Enterprise Strategy By ricHard kadzis obility is the centerpiece of Hewlett Packard’s recent workplace transformation initiative. The strategy is to reduce the company’s real estate holdings, occupy fewer sites globally but increase the effectiveness of the remaining sites. Renee Leach, Director, Global Workplace Program, describes HP as “a forwardlooking company” that wants to stay ahead of the Alternative Workplace Strategies adoption curve and take advantage of the opportunities presented by a more mobile work force working inside its redesigned workplaces. Four key goals drive the strategy: n An integrated set of space, technology and service solutions providing a productive work environment n Well-utilized resources supporting various work styles M n n A combination of workspaces to meet both independent and collaborative work Flexible, measureable programs that can change to accommodate continuous work force and workflow evolution ing employees to work effectively as team members in both face-to-face, and distributed, conditions. Enabling this work and supporting the desired productivity by integrating our service offerings represent a big piece of our work. leader: So integration and collaboration are important themes that run within the HP workplace transformation? leacH: It’s a “best practices idea”, the idea of utilizing our worldwide talent pool in a cross-functional way. The benefit is our ability to bring the best talent, regardless of where they reside, together to solve a problem. Generally speaking we see increased performance in how teams operate, increased willingness by members to work collaboratively as part of a team, and an increased focus on team deliverables. The impact on our physical workplace Joining Leach in a recent interview with LEADER magazine were two other key members of the HP Global Workplace Program team: Chris Hood, Program Manager, The HP Workplace; and Ed Nolan, Director, Workplace Environments. leader: HP now occupies less space, yet is seeing higher productivity.
