What other advice can you lend from a career standpoint? leacH: Reiterate the basics: continuously producing results; having customer focus; and understanding the business enterprise. Then, it’s about mastering change along with the capability of adapting to several disciplines. Hood: The most valuable individuals in the future are those who will be able to integrate multiple disciplines successfully. Even better, those who have a working knowledge of previously separate fields (example: project management and change management) will be invaluable and highly treasured. The biggest breakthroughs will come in the space between disciplines, not in the disciplines themselves, and employees who are comfortable working in these areas will have the most to offer. NolaN: Today’s business world places a premium on a different set of skills than when we first entered the work force. Now we value cognitive skills; innovative thinkers; cross-functional integrators; facilitation skills; and the ability to lead virtually. No doubt the list in ten years time will be different again, and therefore the ability to adapt, grow and change becomes paramount. n Fortune 14 $104-billion annual sales 170 countries 172,000 employees 58 million sq. ft. (5.4 million sq. m.) globally n n n n leader: HP coined the phrase, “The Move to Mobility,” in a case study that’s become popular within the CoreNet Global Workplace Community. But it’s also gained recognition inside the group’s new Sustainability Community. Hood: Reconfigured corporate portfolio’s resulting from the leveraging of mobility have the potential to positively impact the environment, often way in excess of the benefits realized by green building design alone. Remember, the most environmentallyfriendly building is the one that is not built. Calculations indicate that reducing the footprint as a result of mobility is invariably favorable. Our employees are already mobile-we know that from our utilization studies- and therefore the achievable space reductions are a net gain and do not need to be offset by increased travel or home energy-use scenarios as is often claimed. As space is offloaded, back to the market, so the need for more new buildings is reduced and the positive impact on the environment continues to grow. To summarize therefore, in addition to major business benefits of both effectiveness and efficiency, employees gain from leacH: For CRE inside HP, it’s developing but not here yet. One reason is the various career and professional development programs which exist inside HP and encourage upwards growth. One gets evaluated by competency level, or trained up, resulting in the fact that most new openings have been filled internally. We have had to hire from outside the company a few times, and each time we went to the CRE industry to fill those roles. For us, the “war’ is the search for engineering talent in the company in years to come, a situation which is likely to become intensified as the babyboomers retire and the supply of young engineering talent shrinks. leader: Have mobility and workplace transformation helped with talent? leacH: Yes, especially on an enterprisewide basis. Mobility is a key to engagement, retention and opportunity. We see this with our usually smaller new acquisitions through the framework of cultural change. The most environmentally friendly building is the one that is not built. 2 0 0 8 tHe le ade r 64 MarcH / april
