Fully scalable and replicable to meet the needs of each facility, iPlan facilitates broad acceptance within Motorola for recommendations based on consistent standards and fact-based research. Benefits include reduced cycle time (from weeks to less than a day), enhanced transparency of decisionmaking to key stakeholders, functional alignment of job requirements with space solutions, and elimination of a time-consuming task, freeing planners’ time for higher value-add activities. Work profiles The iWork IT team developed a web-based program to assign appropriate IT assets to each employee. Managers classify their direct reports as “home,” “mobile,” or “assigned” employees. Based on this designation, employees receive an IT package associated with that specific profile. The system not only assists IT with inventory management, but also helps CRE in programming space solutions based on a simple formula: a worker-to-desk ratio of 1:1 for assigned employees, 2:1 for mobile employees, and no desk allocation for work at home employees. only to employees who meet or exceed performance goals, effectively making mobility a form of reward. The iWork team takes care not to present iWork to employees or managers as a “workfrom-home” program. Although working from home can be a benefit of iWork, the Space Utilization and Work Style studies confirm that most employees who want to work this way do so already. iWork is presented as a way to support employees working across time zones, at a client site, from an office other than their main office, etc. Recommendations to business unit leaders are based on detailed data collection from a variety of sources, rather than relying solely on leaders’ projected needs. has improved as a result of iWork. Annual combined real estate and IT costs average $13,400 for on-site workers, $8,860 for mobile employees and $4,860 for those working at home four or more days per week. Motorola estimates that the rationalizing value enabled by iWork and iPlan will ultimately reduce operating expenses by $75 million annually, including real estate and IT costs.
