With those two facilities, the university had a built in advantage in attracting the NBAF – NBAF research could begin practically immediately and before its facilities are complete. Site-specific design is expected to be completed by the end of the year, and NBAF ground breaking is slated for 2010. Upon, completion, the $451 million, 500,000-sq.-ft. (46,452-sq.m.) facility will be one of the largest federal labs in the country and the largest in the Midwest. As a biosafety level 4 lab, NBAF’s mission is to provide integrated research and response capabilities for animal health and public health, whether from naturally occurring or intentionally introduced diseases and other threats. The facility also will focus on research and vaccines for emerging zoonotic – animal-to-human – and animal diseases such as avian flu, footand-mouth disease, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, West Nile and rift fever. “We all recognize this is a national issue that needs to be addressed,” said R.W. Trewyn, vice president for research at Kansas State University. “If you can cure these diseases in animals, it can become a big deal for public health. Not only could some of these wind up here by accident, but they could wind up here by purpose. “Because these diseases are coming, like it or not, having our U.S. researchers travel overseas to do their work doesn't make any sense,” Trewyn continued. “This sort of facility is critical.” Of course, the NBAF also is a major boon for Manhattan and furthers the region and state’s status as a bioscience leader. With its development, NBAF will create 1,500 construction jobs and 250 to 300 research job once it’s fully operational in 2014. Over the next 20 years, the NBAF’s economic impact is estimated at $3.5 billion. Trewyn also points out that wherever a federal lab locates, it always creates a wave of entrepreneurial efforts and is a magnet for growth, no matter the lab’s expertise. “I believe that every animal health company will want to have a presence in Manhattan, even if it’s just a small office or lab,” Trewyn said. “It'll have a lot of further, positive aspects for Manhattan and the region.” 2009 THE LE ADE R 58 MARCH / APRIL http://www.cushmanwakefield.com http://www.cushmanwakefield.com
