This is the first of what will be an annual publication summarizing the key trends and developments for corporate real estate management over the last year. The report is available now as a free member benefit from our Knowledge Center Online. CoreNet Global continuously gathers and develops a large amount of information on corporate real estate management through our research projects, awards programs, Discovery Forums, presentations at five Summits around the world, Leader articles, EDP programs, knowledge communities and other sources. The State of the Industry Report synthesizes that information to identify key trends and illustrate those trends with real world case studies and examples. The report uses the highly acclaimed CoreNet Global Corporate Real Estate 2010 (CoRE 2010) study published in 2004 as a framework and benchmark for organizing the findings on 2007 trends. The CoRE 2010 study examined the likely nature of corporate real estate management in the future in response to the forces of business change such as globalization, demographics, technology and sustainability. A strength of the report is the process used to validate the findings. CoreNet Global staff developed a draft of the report based on the large amount information from our programs. Then these findings were discussed, debated and modified at the CoreNet Global Industry Leaders Roundtable in January 2008 by more than 50 senior corporate real estate leaders from multiple industry sectors and the major disciplines of the industry. The final report reflects the input from the Industry Roundtable. Another strength of The State of the Industry Report is direct electronic access to referenced materials. The online report is an interactive electronic document with linkages to dozens of case studies and research reports available through our Knowledge Center Online. Therefore, the reader can access directly online the case studies and other materials that support or illustrate the findings. Access to these materials on the Knowledge Center Online is a free member benefit. The report finds that the general direction of change for corporate real estate management mapped out in CoRE 2010 is still valid, but in some areas the adoption rate for CoRE 2010 concepts is lagging or different than anticipated. The trends also vary by region, as executives in Asia and Europe confirmed for us. For example, the importance of sustainability and the war for talent were identified in the CoRE 2010 study, but we now have a much greater understanding of how these issues are influencing corporate real estate and how they vary across industry sectors and global regions.
