executIve p r o f Il e ANZ’s Jane Hamilton: Leveraging Intangibles to Create Value for the Enterprise By rIchard kadzIs knack for adapting, branching out beyond a given specialty. A willingness to try new things and to take a chance. The ability to communicate. More and more senior corporate real estate (CRE) executives regard these among the most salient – and intangible – qualities that industry professionals need today to lead. Jane Hamilton, Global Head of Property for ANZ, fits the profile. ANZ is one of the five largest and most successful companies in Australia, it is the No. 1 bank in New Zealand, and it has locations throughout Asia-Pacific and in New York City and Frankfurt. Her career embodies change, and she embraces it with the belief that corporate real estate and property are “agents of change” across the enterprise. For example, she views change management and workplace practices on the same plane. A In a sense, Hamilton’s lived change as a career credo, too, starting with her first job out of school as an actress, then a producer. Her migration from performing arts to corporate performance has a ring of CRE pre-destiny to it. “Life,” she asserts, “chose for me where I should go.” A turning point came with her first job in commercial real estate. She had gone to university to earn a marketing degree and made the shift to CRE. “It was one of those lucky things that happened,” she remembers about working for Lend Lease. She stayed eight years working in different property areas, benefiting from the “strong, supportive culture” at Lend Lease, she recalls. She also managed Darling Park at Darling Harbour, Sydney’s version of Fanueil Hall Marketplace in Boston or Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. That’s where she developed another suite of leadership traits: an appreciation for the beauty and purpose of buildings; a love of creative collaboration with the industry’s design side; and, of course, “the importance of good building design.” Looking at her career track, Hamilton underscores another point. “Loving what you do makes you more effective.” Creativity and communication combine with passion to make for good theatre. In Hamilton’s case, they also make for good CRE leadership skills, starting with her determination to sustain an enterprise leadership role for property across ANZ’s business lines. “People miss out on the high level of value that property can offer,” she surmises. “They don’t step back and ask, ‘What can property do to add value?’” Add ANZ to the growing list of companies that see the value and use CRE as an enterprise driver. “We’re very much involved at the strategic level, up front in all processes the le ade r 52 J u ly / a u g u s t
