TNT created Planet Me as the company’s response to climate change, realizing that – as one of the world’s largest air and road transport companies – it must be part of the solution. The company believes that determined action by companies and individuals can make a big impact. In fact, TNT has begun the quest to become the first zero-emission mail and expressdelivery company. But in a classic real estate sense, it’s also about using less space and realizing the energy and other sustainable benefits that accrue through this practice. “It’s the economics that drove the decision” to downsize, retool and otherwise consolidation data center operations at Sun, Nelson emphasized. “Then we derive the ecological benefits and gains . . . We’ve gone from being the barrier to the enabler.” Wells Fargo’s San Francisco Portfolio Strategy Wells Fargo’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Real Estate (CRE), David Nelson, presented an in-depth study of how Wells Fargo leveraged its size, credit ranking and cash holdings to essentially future proof its downtown San Francisco space holdings from economic cycles. The impressive portfolio play involved multiple experts inside and outside of the bank, and the results saved hundreds of millions of dollars on expensive leased and owned real estate in the central business district (CBD), where the bank wanted to concentrate more employees. Nelson’s team includes Arthur Barbour, a Vice President inside Wells Fargo who also has a lot of experience in brokerage and managing outside providers. Mark McGranahan, Executive Director for Cushman & Wakefield based in San Francisco, also plays an active role. Southern California Discovery Forum Host: Toyota Motor Sales USA Sustainability at Toyota Toyota Motor Sales, USA, bases its main corporate campus in Torrance, Calif. Facility Operations Manager, Mark Yamauchi, provided an extensive overview and analysis of the reasons why the auto manufacturer has integrated sustainability as a core business practice – both across the enterprise and within CRE. In fact, CRE has established itself as the corporation’s sustainability leader in many senses. It starts with its realization of CRE’s natural link from facilities to energy, water, design and other forms of conservation. It extends to the company’s strategic use of sustainability as a competitive business advantage.
