The game at Pine Hollow Country Club in East Norwich, N.Y., was followed by dinner, a raffle, silent auction and casino night. In the end, the Jericho, N.Y., dealership group had raised $85,000 for Ascent: A School for Individuals with Autism, in Deer Park, N.Y. Ross’ interiors company pushes into China, India David Barkholz dbarkholz@crain.com Wilbur Ross’ International Automotive Components Group is expanding in China with one new plant opened and two others in the works. A 6,000-square-foot plant in Wuhan is the interior supplier’s first new plant in China since the company was formed from parts of other suppliers. The plant is a partnership with another Ross-controlled company, Mitsuboshi Kaseihin Co., of Japan. IAC also intends to break ground in coming months on two additional plants in China, said Jim Kamsickas, CEO of IAC’s North American operations. IAC will own those plants exclusively. The company also plans a plant in India. IAC is expanding in Asia as it rounds out a global footprint heavy in North America and Europe. The company was created in 2006 from Lear Corp.’s interiors business and assets of Collins & Aikman Corp. sold in Chapter 11 bankruptcy. IAC has since acquired parts of other companies. The company has parts on nearly every vehicle made in North America. IAC posted global sales to automakers of about $5.31 billion in 2007. By 2010, IAC expects to operate 10 plants in China either as wholly owned factories or with Chinese partners. IAC is growing in China and India to support those local markets, Kamsickas said. IAC will supply 10 Chinese automakers by 2010, up from one currently. The new customers will include SAIC, BMW, Volvo and Geely. IAC sales in China last year totaled about $38 million, based on sales by joint ventures partly owned by the predecessors of IAC. Those plants employ about 450 people. A regional headquarters and engineering center in Shanghai employs about 50. IAC also is making moves into India. The company this year opened a headquarters and engineering center in Pune. The supplier now has a staff of 75. IAC also is planning a plant that will be announced this month. Those operations in India will support new interiors contracts with Mahindra & Mahindra, Mahindra Navistar and Volkswagen. c A CUDL conversation with the owner of what may be the nation’s fastest growing dealership group — the $1.4 billion Ken Garff Automotive Group of Salt Lake City, Utah. ROBERT GARFF ON THE SPGT: AT A GLANCE: With a last name that has been in the automotive business for over 75 years, Robert talks about expanding ON THE SPOT: We know your father, Ken Garff, started this business in 1932. When did you start? GARFF: I started at age 13, sweeping floors in our body shop. By the time I was 16, I was a salesman in one of our used car operations. I learned the business from the ground up. ON THE SPOT: What do you contribute to your family’s success? GARFF: Garff’s never, never give up. You know that speaks to longevity, that speaks to doing things right. That means stick-to-itness. ON THE SPOT: How involved are you with the communities you serve? GARFF: One of the main ingredients of our success is that we play an active part in the community. As much as 20 to 30 percent of our lives are spent giving back to the communities we serve. ON THE SPOT: How do you feel about CUDL in terms of what it’s done for you?
