The Automotive Quality Providers Association, of Grand Rapids, Mich., says the lack of such standards threatens to erode consumer confidence in new technologies and slow the deployment of those technologies. “Rapidly rising fuel prices and concerns regarding the environment are driving innovative technologies to market at a pace that necessitates caution,” says Russell Shostak, CEO of Automotive Containment and Consulting Inc. and president of the new association. In the 1980s, automakers and suppliers turned to outside providers of quality control services. Consultants helped identify and fix quality problems. More players entered to support demand in niche markets.
