Barack Obama for president: Dingell still has the drive Did Sen. Carl Levin simply misspeak or inadvertently reveal confidential inside information about Rep. John Dingell, his Michigan colleague and longtime auto industry ally in Congress? In remarks aimed at pumping up Democratic delegates, Levin vowed that lawmakers and the Obama administration will enact a national health care program in the next two years. Looking at Dingell, he added: “Before you leave Congress.” Dingell, 82, is a candidate for reelection in November to a record 28th term. He has given no indication of when he will retire. Levin later insisted he had merely made a mistake. Dingell’s chief of staff, Michael Robbins, said his boss is eager to undertake new projects for years to come. Bozzella’s calculation: “This is 95 percent work, 3 percent enjoyment and 2 percent, hopefully, some sleep.” Bury this gift In contrast to lobbyists for some individual automakers, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers adopted a low-key approach at the convention. Alliance President Dave McCurdy spoke at the Big Tent, a giant convention work site for a horde of bloggers. His group, which represents the Detroit 3, Toyota and six other automakers, contributed to a bag of favors given to each convention-goer. The alliance gift was a card that describes EcoDrivingUSA.com, a new Web site that tells motorists how they can increase their mileage while reducing their carbon footprint. In keeping with the convention’s green theme, the card was printed on recycled paper and embedded with wildflower seeds. “Plant this card,” it encouraged. Will the alliance put the same item in this week’s goodie bag for delegates to the Republican convention in St. Paul, Minn.? Uh, no. Said spokesman Charles Territo: “Different crowd.” OVERSTOCKED!!! John Bozzella of Chrysler LLC has attended Democratic conventions on both sides of the government-industry divide. In 1988, he was a young staffer for the Michael Dukakis presidential campaign, fielding calls and satisfying requests from delegates on the convention floor. The New England dealer says he was “completely enamored” of Obama until he learned of the nominee’s position on card check. Now the dealer says he may not vote. Each side in the card-check debate accuses the other of intimidation. Proponents say that under current labor law, employers threaten and sometimes fire pro-union activists and unduly influence voting in organizing elections. The opposition has formed the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace, whose members include the National Association of Manufacturers and the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association. The latter group represents more than 700 suppliers, about half of them parts makers for originalequipment manufacturers. Ann Wilson, the association’s senior vice president for government affairs, says her members vehemently oppose card check. Import brand automakers have blocked unionization of most of their U.S. factories. They are taking a lowkey approach to card check.
