The Canadian supplier already operates 21 factories in Mexico. The expansion is part of a strategy to build 16 plants in low-cost regions, including Asia and central and eastern Europe, in the next three years, Walker said this month in New York. As of last week, neither Walker nor Magna had released details about where the plants will be built or what parts they will make. Speaking at a Morgan Stanley global automotive conference, Walker said: “We have been steadily trying to move our footprint into low-cost regions. Mexico will continue to be a very attractive place in which to do business.” During a question-and-answer session, Walker said Magna would have 20 plants in China by 2010. But he added that costs in China are increasing. “In about half the situations we analyze, Mexico is actually more competitive than China.” Walker said that by 2010 Magna expected 8 percent of its total sales to be “outside our traditional markets of North America and Europe,” compared with 4 percent in 2007 and 1 percent in 2001. “We see Russia as a very important market and very important for Magna,” he said. “The Russian government sees the automotive industry as a key strategic industry for bringing technology and employment into the country.” He added that Magna is targeting 10 percent of its sales with Asian manufacturers by 2010, up from 6 percent in 2007 and 4 percent in 2001. Magna has 241 manufacturing and 62 engineering and r&d sites around the world. The company had sales of $26.1 billion in 2007, up from $23.9 billion in 2006. Walker said Magna expects sales of between $24.9 billion and $26.2 billion in 2008. Magna ranks No. 4 on the Automotive News list of the top 100 global suppliers. c CHRYSLER LLC Expires March 31. 2007 models Chrysler 300, Aspen, Pacifica, Town & Country PT Cruiser, Sebring Dodge Ram 1500 Ram 2500/3500, Durango Grand Caravan, Dakota Caravan, Charger, Magnum Caliber, Nitro Jeep Commander Grand Cherokee, Liberty Compass, Patriot 0% 0-1.9% 0-1.9% 0-1.9% 0-1.9% 0-1.9% 0-1.9% 0-1.9% 0-1.9% MITSUBISHI Expires March 31.
