The automaker has urged a similar combination of Buick, Pontiac and GMC dealerships in recent years. “We want to run a little hard on our luxury side and see if we can’t be a little more proactive, particularly in certain markets, trying to help dealer profitability by getting better alignment with Saab, Hummer and Cadillac,” CEO Rick Wagoner said here this month at the National Automobile Dealers Association convention. Wagoner acknowledged that combining stores would be a mutual decision with dealers. But he said GM is looking to “pick up the pace” in channeling the three upscale brands. “We’ve got some overlap in the Cadillac, Hummer and Saab stores,” Wagoner said. Many Hummer dealers spent millions renovating their stores to GM’s specifications to represent the offroad brand’s image. GM declined to comment on the fate of those stores or whether they could house Cadillac and Saab showrooms. “We really don’t want to go into it,” Brent Dewar, GM’s vice president of field sales, service and parts, said in a separate interview with Automotive News. “Each one is a unique situation.” The luxury channeling effort lags behind the Buick-Pontiac-GMC consolidation. GM has pared the Buick, Pontiac and GMC product lineups to the point that some single-brand stores would be difficult to operate. Buick’s lineup, for example, consists of two cars and one crossover. GM officials say Cadillac, Hummer and Saab have broad enough lineups that high-volume, stand-alone stores would continue to do well in some locations. Those areas include northern Virginia, Washington and New York, Wagoner said. “But where we’ve got a lot of stand-alone Hummer and Saab stores, in a lot of cases we think it might make sense to move alignment,” he said. “We are sensitive to the fact that the cost of doing business continues to escalate, and so it does suggest higher throughput is going to help them.” c CAPITAL AVAILABLE If you have an opportunity that requires funding but does not fit traditional banking parameters contact us. GM outlined its five-point green strategy to dealers here this month at the National Automobile Dealers Association convention. The automaker wants dealers to promote GM as working toward making more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient vehicles. The company also hopes dealers can lobby lawmakers to create more E85 pumps at gasoline stations. E85 fuel is 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. The hope is that one day, 25 to 50 percent of the U.S. market will run on biofuels such as E85, Brent Dewar, GM’s vice president of field sales, service and parts, said in an interview with Automotive News. GM has laid out five future solution “pathways” to help ease the U.S. dependency on oil and yet still meet consumers’ needs, Dewar said. The five pathways would help maintain the balance of what Dewar dubs the three E’s: energy, environment and economics. The five pathways are: 1. Improving fuel economy in traditional internal combustion engines or diesels. 2. Using biofuels such as E85 or ethanol to power internal combustion engines. 3. Launching more hybrid vehicles. 4. Producing E-Flex vehicles that would run mostly on lithium ion batteries. 5. Using hydrogen fuel cells, which emit only water. There won’t be just one solution to the fuel issue, Dewar said. For example, people who use trucks to haul loads will be most interested in a biofuel or diesel powertrain, he said. If a person is just a commuter who worries about emissions, then a hydrogen-powered vehicle will best suit that person’s needs. “We need to find solutions that are economically viable to both the consumers and the policymakers, and it’s not always well-understood,” Dewar said. “We have to educate and be on the forefront and show that we as manufacturers want to be part of the solution.” GM plans to be more aggressive in supporting E85 infrastructure by running local marketing campaigns to promote gasoline stations that carry the fuel, Dewar said. “We want to help consumers know http://www.DealerLaw.Com http://WWW.VEHICLEDISPLAYS.COM http://www.leasemaker.com http://www.randyshepard.com http://www.chapmanenterprise.com http://www.proquotes.net http://www.mars4u.com http://www.autoqual.com http://Etccapital.com http://www.securitykeysystems.com http://L-master.com http://www.autonews.com/classifieds http://www.automotivenews.com
