Programs may vary by region and model. Tundra sales fell well short of expectations in January. So are alarms sounding at Toyota? Last year, Toyota’s redesigned fullsized pickup sold in the 18,000-to22,000 range during most months. January’s total was 12,073. That’s way ahead of January 2007, when the previous-generation Tundra was being sold out and before the redesigned model was available. But it was the lowest monthly Tundra total since the new one was fully ramped up last spring. Annualized, it was just 185,000 units — well below the 200,000-plus target Toyota has set for 2008. But Toyota executives say they aren’t worried about meeting the fullyear goal. “I learned from (former Toyota boss) Bob McCurry to never make long-term decisions based on January and February business,” said Jim Lentz, president of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. “We’re not pushing the panic button.” January usually accounts for about 6.5 percent of the annual Tundra sales, Lentz said in an interview. And he said February sales are looking “pretty good.” “We have plenty of time to recover from 185,000 up to 200,000,” he said. “The first half of 2008, especially in pickup, is going to be more challenging. We’re comfortable with where we are.” The Tundra’s two main rivals were off in January. Sales of Ford’s F series were down 8.4 percent to 41,125, and the Chevrolet Silverado slipped 5.9 percent to 36,122. Toyota will not pile on the incentives in reaction to a slow January, Lentz added. “Typically we follow Detroit (in launching incentives), we don’t lead.” c BMW Expires Feb. 29. 2008 models 7 series M, Z4 2007 models M, Z4 $5,500-$7,500 $5,000 $2,500-$3,500 CHRYSLER LLC Expires Feb. 29. On Thursday, Feb. 21, the giant supplier received U.S. Bankruptcy Court approval to sell its global steering unit to an affiliate of Platinum Equity LLC, a private equity company in Los Angeles. The steering business posted revenue of about $2.7 billion last year. The deal is scheduled to close March 31. Also Thursday, Delphi agreed to sell its bearing business. Hephaestus Holdings Inc. agreed to buy assets of Delphi’s North American bearings business for about $18.7 million, said Hephaestus spokesman Mark Semer. The assets include a Delphi plant in Sandusky, Ohio, plus inventory and machinery. Hephaestus, of suburban Detroit, makes forged parts for the North American automotive market. KPS Capital Partners LP owns most of the company. KPS this month saw another of its companies, Blue Water Plastics Inc. in suburban Detroit, enter Chapter 11 reorganization. Blue Water Plastics makes plastic injection parts for the auto industry. Delphi entered Chapter 11 in 2005. It has been selling assets as part of its strategy to refocus its business and raise funds. c HYUNDAI Expires Feb. 29.
