The company still trails Volkswagen AG and General Motors in overall sales. But last year it leapfrogged domestic rival Honda Motor Co. to be the top Japanese brand in the country. Toyota now is eyeing a 53.8 percent sales increase to 700,000 units this year on its way to 1.0 million in the early 2010s. Sales jumped 62.3 percent to 455,038 vehicles in 2007. As a sign of Toyota’s ascent, the Camry was the third-best-selling car in China last year. Looking ahead, Toyota will have to navigate the pitfalls of quick expansion as it sets up new sales outlets and boosts production to meet demand. Japanese press reports are rife with speculation that the company will soon build an eighth assembly plant in China. Toyota also will have to deepen the roots of 17 TOYOTA CAMRY its Lexus luxury lineup. By the end of January, Toyota had 469 sales outlets in China, up from 366 in November 2006. Lexus sales points, however, rose to 39, from just 13. Plant 2 of Sichuan FAW Toyota Motor Co., which makes Land Cruiser SUVs and Prius hybrid vehicles, struggled. In 2006, the joint venture sold just 4,858 vehicles. Sales dropped to 2,925 units last year, reflecting Chinese disenchantment with the pricey Prius. Prius sales tumbled 80.7 percent to a paltry 414 vehicles in 2007. And the model could get squeezed even further as Chinese manufacturers roll out cheaper hybrids of their own. Still, Toyota’s overall sales are expected to get a big boost from an influx of fresh product. Lexus launched its top-of-the-line LX 570 SUV in January, just as SUV sales began to pick up in China. A redesigned subcompact Vios appeared in February. Meanwhile, Toyota will get positive spillover from December’s launch of a refreshed Land Cruiser. Finally, a next-generation Yaris is expected around midyear. — Hans Greimel JV: Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Co. — Plant 1 No. 2, Liuli Road, Yang Liu Qing, Xiqing District, Tianjin 300380, P.R.
