North American production could fall well below 14 million units this year from 15.1 million in 2007. Hardest hit are the Detroit 3, which rely on pickups, SUVs and minivans for more than 60 percent of sales. That slump is costing suppliers reliant on the Detroit 3 dearly. In fact, the 10 biggest losers on this year’s Automotive News list are all based in North America. Each of the 10 losers had at least 41 percent of total global sales in North America. ArvinMeritor Inc. posted the largest decline in percentage and absolute terms. ArvinMeritor’s global sales tumbled 30.4 percent, or $2.79 billion, to $6.40 billion. The supplier ranked No. 26, down from No. 19 in 2006. Two giant seat makers, Johnson Controls and Lear, also stumbled. In 2007, Johnson Controls’ global sales dropped 5.1 percent to $18.50 billion. Lear’s 2007 sales fell 10.3 percent to $15.99 billion. Continental AG, of Germany, made the biggest gain, rising from 12th to fourth place in total sales. Continental’s 2007 acquisition of Siemens VDO Automotive Corp. helped more than double sales to $25.00 billion from $11.47 billion in 2006. Besides Continental, two other suppliers among the top 100 saw their sales more than double. Martinrea International Inc., of Vaughn, Ontario, led the percentage gainers. Its sales rose 165.4 percent to $1.96 billion in 2007 from $740 million in 2006. Sales also doubled at Nemak, of Mexico. in Europe, three in the United States, two in Japan and one in Canada. Denso is “pleased” by the ranking and “grateful to our customers,” says Denso Europe President Shigehiro Nishimura. “But to us, being number one based on total global sales is not a goal. We are more focused on being number one in the products that we produce.” Denso is a leader in thermal and powertrain controls, electronics, small motors and telecommunications. The company credits much of its growth to the giant automaker from which it was spun off in 1949 — Toyota. The Toyota Group, including subsidiaries Hino Motors Ltd. and Daihatsu Motor Co., represented 49.2 percent of Denso’s originalequipment sales. Toyota owns 22.9 percent of Denso directly and more through other Toyota Group members. Bosch owns 5.3 percent of Denso. That stake is a vestige of the days when the Japanese supplier, then known as Nippondenso, licensed technologies from the German company. Denso’s size allows it to share research and design, distribution, basic designs and manufacturing competency across product lines. “They have capitalized on the dramatic growth of Toyota, but they’ve really taken advantage of their scale,” said Dave Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich. Said Bernd Bohr, CEO of Bosch’s automotive division: “Absolute size does not mean a lot. Relative size in our product areas is much more important.” “Remaining number one is not something we are worried about.
