LLC in a deal valued at $330 million. Kohlberg, of Mount Kisco, N.Y., will form a company to run the glass business, and PPG will retain a 40 percent interest in that company. The deal will net PPG $270 million in cash. Last year, the Pittsburgh company announced it would sell the glass business to the private equity firm Platinum Equity. But the $500 million deal fell apart after Platinum wanted to renegotiate, alleging PPG had misrepresented the health of the business. At the time, PPG said that if the deal with Platinum Equity did not close, it would explore strategic alternatives for the glass business. “This transaction is another positive step forward in our portfolio transformation,” PPG CEO Charles Bunch said in a statement. “It enables us to focus more on coatings and specialty products and significantly reduces PPG’s exposure to the U.S. automotive market.” PPG Industries has been making glass since 1883, when the company was founded as the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. It became an automotive supplier in the 1920s. PPG’s automotive glass and services business supplies original-equipment windshields, rear and side windows, sunroofs and assemblies for auto and truck manufacturers and suppliers. The company also distributes aftermarket automotive glass products. c Reuters contributed to this report American Suzuki gets new president LOS ANGELES — Rick Suzuki, head of American Suzuki Motor Corp. for the past decade, was replaced last week by Kinji (Kevin) Saito, who had been deputy executive general manager of global marketing for Suzuki Motor Corp. in Japan. Saito, 49, has never worked in the United States. From 2002 to 2006, he was director of marketing and sales at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. As president, Saito will oversee three business units — automotive, motorcycle/ATV and marine, and corporate operations. Rick Suzuki, 60, who had been chairman, now is board adviser. He is the grandson of Suzuki Motor Corp. founder Michio Suzuki. He took the helm of the U.S. operation in 1998. In a March 28 letter to employees, Rick Suzuki said he would leave because of lagging sales and operating losses. Through the first six months of this year, Suzuki’s U.S. sales were down 2.2 percent to 56,248 units. — Kathy Jackson †DaimlerChrysler sold the Chrysler group on Aug. 3, 2007; Chrysler LLC and Daimler AG totals through July 2007 are extracted from DaimlerChrysler. *Estimate ††Ford Motor Co. sold Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors on June 2, 2008; Jaguar's and Land Rover's sales are included in Ford Motor Co. totals through May 2008.
