Automotive News - December 1, 2008 - (Page 52) 52 • DECEMBER 1, 2008 GM cancels make meetings at NADA DETROIT — General Motors is canceling its franchise make meetings at the 2009 National Automobile Dealers Association convention in New Orleans. Instead, GM will hold one general company meeting Sunday, Jan. 25. The move harks back to GM’s practice from 1999 to 2002, when it stopped holding brand meetings in favor of a single session for all brands. News of the decision emerged Tuesday, Nov. 25. “GM is cutting a lot of expenses and looking at every item,” said Michael Martin, the Virginia NADA director and GM line chair for industry relations. Martin, who owns Dudley Martin Chevrolet in Manassas, Va., says many dealers now are not franchisespecific. He said the general meeting will run three hours rather than the usual two hours. Overall, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave its top safety designation to 72 new-vehicle models — twice the 2008 number and three times the figure for 2007. Among the factors accounting for the increase: greater use by automakers of seats and head restraints that meet the institute’s safety criteria, wider availability of electronic stability control and expanded installation of side airbags that offer head protection in collisions.
