Automotive News - June 2, 2008 - (Page 16) 16 • JUNE 2, 2008 ADVERTISING STAFF Chrysler’s Chernoby: Growing up gearhead M ark Chernoby comes across as pretty relaxed for a guy in charge of a top-secret vehicle development program vital to the future of Chrysler LLC. He is just as happy spending a day on Spider Lake in northwest Michigan as he is poring over the technical details of core components. In April, Chernoby was named head of Project D, Chrysler’s Circulation 313-446-0450 Advertising 313-446-6050 Classified Advertising 313-446-6065, 800-388-1800 E-mail rgreer@crain.com Web site www.autonews.com ADVERTISING AND SALES DETROIT Person to person moonshot mission to develop a variety of vehicles off a new midsized global vehicle platform. JOE WILSSENS Chrysler’s Mark Chernoby: “Instead of running around town getting in trouble, we spent time there fixing each other’s cars.” assignment came as a shock. Chernoby’s predecessor, Mike Donoughe, left the company just two months after being named to the Project D job. Chernoby has held several engineering posts at Chrysler. Among them: head of advance vehicle engineering; executive engineer at the Chrysler Proving Grounds; manager of the company’s large-car platform; and head of the Noise, Vibration and Harshness Laboratory. He chairs the Society of Automotive Engineers Technical Standards Board and is a member of the Hydrogen Technology Advisory Committee reporting to U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman. Name: Mark Chernoby Title: vice president and chief engineer, Project D, Chrysler LLC Age: 46 Family: Married, two children Lives: Lake Orion, Mich. Education: Master’s in engineering and M.B.A., University of Michigan What was your first car? A 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner — one heckuva lot of fun. It had a 383 with a bench seat in the front and a four-speed pistol grip. Probably more car than a teenager deserves. What’s your ultimate dream car? Actually, with my lifestyle, a nice big four-wheel-drive Dodge Ram would suit me just fine. Why did you get into the car business? I grew up as a teenager in a divorced family. There are times when you become the man around the house. So I grew up enjoying hands-on activities, fixing things, working on things. I grew up with gearheads. Instead of running around town getting in trouble, we spent time there fixing each other’s cars. What are your hobbies? Golf. Fishing. I like hunting and working around the yard. Virtually any outdoor activity. But I’m getting a little old for those pickup tackle football games. What about a boat? I have two — a pontoon boat and a boat one might call a fish and ski boat. I have a place up north south of Traverse City on Spider Lake. What music are you listening to now? Bob Seger. Some of the stuff you resonate with from the late ’70s early ’80s, like Boston, the stuff I remember from high school days. In high school and college, my son was very big with classical music, so we’ll click on the classical station. What’s the last book you read? Who Moved My Cheese? (by Spencer Johnson). It’s about how you manage being a change agent. It’s a very funny, anecdotal little story. I enjoy the challenge of being a change agent. — Bradford Wernle We approve every customer in writing in 30 seconds or less… so you can convert your turndowns into approvals and sales.
