HEN DIANE SAUER WAS NAMED
one of the four finalists for the 2016
TIME Dealer of the Year at that year's
NADA Show, she was struck by how special
the award felt.
"It was great to be one of the nominees
being recognized," says Sauer, president
of Diane Sauer Chevrolet in Warren, Ohio.
"But even though there were 50 people up
on the stage, they really represented all of
us car dealers.
"I remember thinking, 'How many
industries take the time to recognize
people in this way for their community
involvement?' "
Scott LaRiche, another 2016 nominee,
agrees. "It was great to be singled out but
humbling at the same time," says LaRiche,
vice president of Lou LaRiche Chevrolet
in Plymouth, Mich. "When I was at the
awards ceremony and meeting people,
hearing their stories and what they have
done in their communities, I felt that I am
just one of many people who give back to
their communities."
Now in its 49th year, the TIME Dealer
of the Year Award recognizes the nation's
most successful auto dealers who also
demonstrate a long-standing commitment
to community service through fundraising
and volunteering to support worthy causes
in their hometowns and around the world.
This year's nominees encompass 47
dealers from across the country-from
Maine to Hawaii and Montana to Florida.
Four regional finalists will be announced in
March at the NADA Show in Las Vegas, and
one of those will be named the 2018 TIME
Dealer of the Year.
Dealers are nominated by their state or
local dealer associations. Each nominee
must meet certain criteria, including being
a franchised new-car dealer, the operating
head of the dealership with an active
presence in the business and an active
member of his or her dealer association.
