North American automakers rebounded after a difficult December, when General Motors and Ford Motor Co. posted double-digit declines. Among the Detroit 3, GM had the best January. GM sales rose 18.1 percent to 26,509 vehicles. GM’s car sales were up 43.7 percent. Ford sales climbed 8.8 percent to 13,449 in January. A 14.0 percent increase in truck sales fueled Ford’s gain. Sales of the Edge surged 151.0 percent to 788 vehicles. Escape sales gained 59.9 percent from January 2007 to 1,837. Chrysler sales rose 2.6 percent to 16,952 vehicles.
