But with TV writers on strike, uncertainty looms over what programs will be available for commercials and what viewer numbers are expected. “We have to contingency-plan,” says Ben Poore, vice president of marketing communications for Nissan and Infiniti at Nissan North America Inc. “We’re tracking it very closely.” Nissan plans to launch major media marketing for the redesigned Nis- san Murano crossover and Infiniti EX crossover next month. Poore declined to reveal specific advertising plans for the vehicles but said he will be flexible in the media mix. “You can do a lot of things,” Poore said last week at the Detroit auto show. “You can put more into cable, more onto the Net.” The strike by the Writers Guild of America has stopped work on TV programs. In turn, networks have delayed or suspended production of fall shows. Nissan recently began U.S. marketing for its upcoming high-end sports car, the GT-R, on an Internet pro- gram called “Nissan Live Sets on Yahoo Music.” Poore also revealed that Nissan will buy time for the Murano launch during the Super Bowl in February. It will be the Nissan’s first Super Bowl spot since Maxima commercials ran in 1998. He said the Murano commercials will run in selected markets, not as a national ad. Poore said the year’s media buying will be complicated further by the presidential campaign. TV ads can be bumped by campaign coverage, even during the primaries of the next few weeks. c 800 843 7766 www.leasemaker.com lm Pa S O ProQuotes Forms Forms Building - All Systems We Support Reynolds Legacy www.proquotes.net 800 456-5178 WANTED LAW FIRM. Treece jtreece@crain.com Phil Murtaugh, Chrysler’s Asia chief, says the Chinese underestimated the task of modifying cars to meet U.S. needs. “There’s nothing wrong with the Chery products. It’s just market requirements,” he said. China’s current automotive regulations also are out of date for advanced markets, following Euro 3 rules for emissions and 1993 U.S. rules for safety, he said. Still, he said, “We’re on track in our discussions with them to execute this deal.” China is Chrysler’s main focus in Asia, Murtaugh said. It is adding engineers to the 150 employees it already has there. While India and southeast Asia are his next two priorities, he admits: “I haven’t even started in southeast Asia.” Chrysler has about 15 staffers in India, mainly in purchasing. Says Murtaugh: “We’re learning to crawl in India.”c Li Shufu says Geely’s Mexican plant will have a capacity of 300,000 units a year. Construction will start early this year. That vehicle will not be the previously shown Hornet concept, says Phil Murtaugh, Chrysler’s CEO of Asia operations. “I don’t think any of these manufacturers is going to be able to sell vehicles in North America until 2010 to 2012,” Murtaugh said at the Detroit auto show. “By then the Hornet would be an old vehicle.” The Hornet was “a concept vehicle for the U.S. market,” he said. “When we get a vehicle for the U.S. market, it’ll probably be ready to sell in other markets, too,” with appropriate tweaking, he said. Expectations that a Chery vehicle could come to the United States quickly were “overoptimistic,” he said. “The realities of the market have started setting in.” Murtaugh said Chery was taken by surprise by some of the challenges in overseas markets. For instance, about 80 percent of Chinese cars are sold in flat coastal areas, where temperatures are relatively constant, he said. But in the Americas, vehicles have to cope with changes in altitude and temperature. The Chery vehicles simply weren’t ready.
