The factory, in Guangzhou, is expected to open in the spring and make 140,000 CVTs a year. Jatco is spending ¥6 billion (about $60 million) on the plant, spokesman Kazunori Shibuya said. The company aims to boost its annual global CVT production from 1.6 million units now to 2 million units in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011, Shibuya said. Without being more specific, Shibuya said the company would spend up to $100 million in existing domestic plants to improve production lines. Jatco is expanding to meet growing demand for CVTs, especially from Japanese automakers. Continuously variable transmissions typically improve fuel economy by 10 percent compared with conventional automatic transmissions. In Europe, many automakers are choosing dual-clutch transmissions over CVTs to improve fuel economy in new models. Dual-clutch transmissions also provide a fuel savings of about 10 percent. In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2005, CVT production accounted for only 11 percent of Jatco’s sales. That rose to 39 percent in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2008. Since April 2006, Jatco’s CVT production has risen nearly threefold. The Chinese plant will be Jatco’s second overseas production site, after Mexico. Nissan Motor Co. owns 75 percent of Jatco, while Mitsubishi Motors Corp. holds 15 percent and Suzuki Motor Corp. 10 percent. Jatco supplies all the CVTs used by Nissan and started sales to Chrysler in 2005. c We move the automotive world!
