Automotive News - October 20, 2008 - (Page 24C) Power on by MAGNA STEYR MAGNA STEYR Energy Storage Systems Looking for energy and performance? MAGNA STEYR supplies both – A better product for a better price. Raw material shortage, rising fuel prices, driving restrictions in urban areas, governmental regulations on CO2 emissions, taxation according to consumption and emission volumes are all challenges for automotive and commercial vehicle manufacturers in fulfilling the need of providing their customers with alternative means of transportation in the near future. MAGNA STEYR has set a goal of supporting OEMs in meeting this challenge. MAGNA STEYR has developed three modular battery packs for all types alternative vehicles including hybrid electric vehicles, pure electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles. Energy Battery This battery type is designed for plugin hybrid (power recuperation during braking and recharging with a power cable) and 100% electric vehicles. This battery requires roughly 10 to 30 kWh for a power output of roughly 30 to 120 kW, whereas the energy content determines the range and the shortterm power output determines the dynamics or acceleration capacity of the vehicle. The weight of the entire battery is between 100 and 250 kg. The modular design of basic components makes it possible to individually adapt the requirements of performance data and packaging needs to customer specifications. Prismatic lithium ion cells ensure an optimized volumesaving package. Intelligent connection technology and a liquid cooling system guarantee a defined temperature range throughout the entire battery. Of course the battery is integrated into a comprehensive safety system that monitors all the current parameters and relays respective information to the vehicle in order to achieve optimum performance, and even turns the battery off when critical operating conditions are reached. on CO2 reduction, full hybrids also allow electric driving. COMMENT Battery for Commercial Vehicles The operation mode of these batteries corresponds to a pure hybrid operation. Because of the significantly higher rated weight of trucks and buses, the energy content and performance must be increased respectively. MAGNA STEYR currently supplies a 120 kW system (approximately 200 kg), and a 60 kW and a 180 kW system is currently being developed. Potential fuel savings in urban areas are especially high in public transportation as well as in mid to small-sized distribution trucks. Because the installation space in these vehicles is not all that critical and the round cells offer an improved compromise between high performance and energy density, such cells are used in these applications. The modular system has been tried and tested in these applications on test benches respectively on the road. Hubert Gach Director Innovative Systems & Modules Q: Why has MAGNA STEYR decided to focus on Li-Ion battery packs? A: MAGNA as one of the most diversified global automotive suppliers with high focus on technologically advanced systems and modules is absolutely convinced that this type of energy storage systems is going to be one of the future key technologies. We at MAGNA STEYR are fully committed to develop and manufacture the right applications for our OEMs to face the upcoming challenges in terms of vehicle electrification. Q: When will first MAGNA STEYR battery packs be launched? A: MAGNA STEYR is going to start serial production of Li-Ion battery packs in 2009. The commercial vehicle application ensures significant fuel savings, CO2 and noise reduction. Well, the world-wide race gaining business has started and MAGNA STEYR is ready to be a major player within this competition. Mr. Gach, thank you for the interview. Power Battery The first step to full electric vehicles has been set with hybrid vehicles. Apart from increased driving pleasure these cars offer potentials for fuel reductions up to 30 percent. Hybrid vehicles require battery systems with maximum power density, whereas the energy content is limited. Hybrid applications are divided into mild hybrid applications (10 to 25 kW additional electrical power) and full hybrid applications (25 to 60 kW).
