It now expects sales to contract this year. “I don’t know by how much,” Agustin Rios, president of the national auto parts association, known as INA, told Automotive News on Friday. “But sales this year will be below those of 2007.” INA stands for Industria Nacional de Autopartes. Last month, Rios predicted that Mexican suppliers would generate 2008 sales of $29.7 billion, up 4 percent from 2007. Rios based his earlier forecast on January sales, which totaled $2.58 billion, up 15.4 percent from January 2007. It was the Mexican industry’s 35th successive month of growth. Automotive News has learned that the association’s statistics for February, expected to be published next week, will show sales of $2.56 billion, down 0.55 percent from the previous month and the first contraction in almost three years. “But everything has changed in the past three months,” Rios said last week. “Now I can say that we’ll see a drop in the value and the quantity of parts made” this year. Rios said that between 2008 and the whole of 2010, U.S. production will average 9.4 million vehicles a year, 1 million fewer than in 2007, “which is very serious for Mexico’s auto parts industry.” This month, General Motors and Ford Motor Co. both announced drastic cuts in North American production. This week, GM said it plans to reduce pickup and SUV production by 170,000 units in the second half of the year while increasing car output. As part of that cut, GM is adding a week of idle time this summer at its Silao, Mexico, plant, which makes the Cadillac Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado and Suburban; and GMC Sierra and Yukon XL. Three weeks ago, GM said it would cease production of the Chevrolet Kodiak medium-duty truck in Toluca, Mexico, by year end. “There will be job losses, but for the moment we don’t know how many,” GM spokesman Mauricio Kuri told Automotive News this month. The Toluca complex employs 2,500 workers. Also this month, Ford Motor said production at an assembly plant in Cuautitlan, Mexico, will wind down by year end. The plant, which now produces large pickups, will be retooled for the new Fiesta small car beginning in early 2010.c SUZUKI Expires June 30.
