Automotive News - August 18, 2008 - (Page 28) 28 • AUGUST 18, 2008 Toyota revs up its aftermarket parts business Mark Rechtin mrechtin@crain.com LOS ANGELES — After trying many ways to sell aftermarket accessories during the past three decades, Toyota Racing Development seems to have settled on a business model that works. “We focus on current-model vehicles and stuff that won’t void the warranty,” said Gary Boler, manager of business operations for TRD. “We’re emission-legal and CARB OK’d,” he said, referring to California Air Resources Board regulations. tinued Toyota Supra sports cars. But Toyota’s dowdy image couldn’t carry the performance promise, and the division reached only $20 million in sales, well short of its $50 million target. Shifting focus That led to a rethinking of the TRD business. In 2005, TRD separated its aftermarket accessories development from Toyota’s racing unit, merging it with Toyota Motor Sales’ corporate accessories department. The bonus was that TRD engineers got involved with vehicle development. Previously, TRD had to reverse-engineer parts from finished Toyota vehicles. With the change, TRD parts are better tuned to the vehicles. “We’re more integrated with Toyota now,” Boler said. “We get technical standards and early engineering data, like CAD drawings. We’ve moved our focus from legacy vehicles to having accessories ready at vehicle launch.” Also, TRD parts are now covered under the Supercharged sales In July, TRD sold more accessories than ever, grossing $2.5 million in a disastrous retail environment. Most of the action came from a new line of superchargers, although performance springs, shocks, sway bars, exhaust kits and wheels also played a part, Boler said. Despite the fuel price crunch, among the most popular items was the supercharger for the 5.7liter V-8 engine in the Tundra full-sized pickup. Last month, Toyota Racing Development sold more accessories than ever, thanks in part to a new line of superchargers. A TRD supercharger for a 4.0-liter V-6 engine is shown. It’s a far cry from 2001, when TRD tried to be all things to all people. At that time, TRD created rocker panels for the ill-fated Lexus L Tuned accessories line and made street-illegal parts under the Kazuma brand for The Fast and the Furious crowd. It also offered parts for discon- factory new-car warranty, persuading Toyota dealers to buy parts. Because most supercharger installations require a dealer service tool to reflash the car’s software, TRD needs dealers’ full participation. Dealers benefit from a typical 33 percent profit margin on TRD parts. At a recent racetrack demo day, TRD executives trotted out superchargers for the 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 4.0-liter V-6 and 5.7-liter V-8 engines. Since 1996, when TRD started selling superchargers, Toyota has sold 15,000 units. A supercharger that sells well usually does about 2,000 units a year. Now TRD hopes to do better than that. But because TRD won’t sell big-ticket items such as crate engines, dollar sales of Toyota Racing Development parts still pale compared with those of other Toyota accessories, said Frank Bonnett, administrator of merchandising and promotions. “We are so far below floor mats,” Bonnett said. “But at least we’re above remote starters.” c Milestones Paul Deathriage Jr. of Monarch Ford in Exeter, Calif., received a 25-year award for Ford from Ford Motor Co.
