CITY Dealer seeks sales to out-of-towners continued from Page 4 “My first-generation customers are the base, but it is a shrinking population. The next generation — we are going there. But you have to do the mainstream advertising.” DAI RYOUNG LEE Los Angeles City Hyundai America’s Largest Automobile Dealership Brokerage Firm PROMOTIONAL PRODUCTS hand. “This is the first time I have experienced this disaster,” he says. Steve Kim, president of Rotary Club of Koreatown, says closing the Chevrolet store on Vermont Avenue was a wrenching decision for Lee. “He thought he was letting down the whole community,” says Kim. Speaking English Lee is a past Rotary Club president and has been active in the local neighborhoods. Kim says Lee helped the club add more than 6,000 Korean donors to the Asian American bone marrow donor base. He occasionally brings bottles of wine from his 700bottle cellar to Rotary meetings for members to sample. A personal tragedy factors into Lee’s local ties. Kim says Lee’s commitment to the Korean community became stronger after his son was killed in the 1992 riots in Koreatown. But Koreatown is changing. “When I would go to restaurants 20 years ago, everyone would be speaking Korean,” says Kim. “Now about half will be speaking English. It’s a more diverse market.” L.A. City Hyundai sits on the edge of Koreatown, which also has a large Hispanic population. Korean barbecue restaurants vie with Mexican bakeries for space in the strip shopping centers that line Vermont Avenue. Lee has been forced to market to both communities — as well as to a broader audience. And that’s a big part of his problem. “My first-generation customers are the base, but it is a shrinking population,” he says. “The next generation — we are going there. But you have to do the mainstream advertising.” Selling to a diverse customer base isn’t cheap. Lee’s staff includes people who speak Korean, English and Spanish. He has to run advertisements in all three languages. “We’ve been marketing to the outside communities,” he says. “That’s why my dealership is in difficulty. We have to spend more on advertising. We have to have a bilingual staff. The advertising budget is like double” a typical store’s, says Lee. Is the extra effort worthwhile? “In a good economy, yes,” he says. “In a bad economy, I don’t know if it works.” 800.576.9875 www.nationalbusinessbrokers.com Over 500 Dealerships Sold INDOOR, OUTDOOR & ROTATING DISPLAYS CALL 800-258-9010 - Int'l: 619-258-9010 WWW.VEHICLEDISPLAYS.COM VISA/MC/AMERICAN EXPRESS AUTOMOTIVE DISPLAYS SINCE 1980 BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES UNIQUE VEHICLE INVENTORY access product with proprietary patent pending hardware / software is presently soliciting interest. After graduating, from Southern Cal, Lee needed a green card to remain in the country. He discovered that getting one was much easier if he was self-employed. So Lee spent $5,000 to open a hamburger stand. After a year, he got his green card and sold the burger business. In 1973, Lee took a job as a salesman at Felix Chevrolet in downtown Los Angeles. He soon left the dealership and formed a company that brought groups of Korean-American businessmen into the Chevrolet dealership to buy cars for fleets. It was his first attempt to use his Korean roots as a marketing tool. Lee helped the Koreans obtain credit from banks, and he charged the Koreans a fee of $75 per car. “They bought Oldsmobiles and Chevrolets,” Lee remembers. In 1990 Lee bought the Chevrolet store, his first dealership. In 1992 he added a Buick dealership, and in 1994 he bought two Kia stores. In 1998 he acquired two Hyundai dealerships. All the stores were in Los Angeles. But Lee began selling his dealerships in 2005. “The economy and the real estate was like a balloon with too much air,” he says. “I knew it was going to explode.” His timing was pretty good. Lee says he sold the property underneath one of his dealerships for $12 million. Now only L.A. City Hyundai remains, and he would like to hang on to it. His local roots are deep and his word is “as good as gold,” says Steve Lee, (no relation), executive director of the Korean American Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles. But the generation gap among Korean Americans has hit Dai Lee hard — even in his own family. If L.A. City Hyundai does stay open, Lee’s next big decision is who will run the store after he retires. His daughter isn’t interested. She is a clinical psychologist who is studying for a Ph.D. at Stanford University. But that’s a matter for another day. For now, Dai Lee, like thousands of American auto dealers, is focused on just getting through the next few months. c THE REAL CAR GUYS DREAM!!!
