Teahen Jr. jteahen@crain.com news ANALYSIS Just when you think things can’t get any worse, they do. That’s the best way to describe November auto sales. Last month’s 747,544 deliveries were a monstrous 36.7 percent below sales in November 2007 and 10.9 percent below October’s, which also was a bad month. And no one predicts the slide is over. For the first 11 months of this year, sales fell 16.3 percent, to 12,352,483 units. The seasonally adjusted annual rate of sales slipped to 10.3 million vehicles and is likely to dip below 10 million this month. Fortunately, this year’s sales won’t be that bad. The total is likely to be about 13 million — a far cry from 16.2 million in 2007. Honda 31.6 percent and Nissan North America 42.2 percent. The Korean brands suffered, too. November sales tumbled 38.6 percent for Hyundai-Kia Automotive. 2007 Toyota on top Mini was the only one of the 46 brands sold in the United States to report a sales increase last month. Riding the crest of new product, Mini reported a 43.1 percent jump. GM had the two biggest sales losers among major brands: Hummer, off 63.9 percent, and Saab, down 57.5 percent. Any question where the ax will fall at GM? Cars and trucks split the paltry November sales market just about evenly. Trucks came out on top by 1,070 units, but both segments were down by more than 36 percent from last year. Even though its November sales dropped 33.1 percent below last year’s, Toyota Division had no trouble topping its domestic rivals in November. Toyota sold 6,253 more vehicles than Ford brand and 13,714 more than Chevrolet. The full-year race is more significant. After 11 months, Toyota was 75,421 sales ahead of second-place Chevrolet and seems a shoo-in to lead for the entire year. A foreign brand never has been the full-year best seller in the United States. Every class of vehicles took a bath in November. Sales declines of 30 to 40 percent befell small, mid-sized and upscale cars, as well as pickups and crossovers. Minivan sales plunged 45.6 percent from last year. Sales of SUVs were down 45.4 percent. Chrysler Financial and GMAC Financial Services are controlled by Cerberus Capital Management. Both companies essentially have stopped writing vehicle leases in the United States. Last week, a national think tank confirmed that the nation has been in a recession for a year. Anyone in the auto business could have told you that a year ago. All the big players shared in November’s horror. The Detroit 3’s domestic brands plunged 39.5 percent. GM was down 41.2 percent, Ford Motor 29.7 percent, and Chrysler LLC 47.1 percent. Where’s the bottom? We believe auto sales will continue to be lower than a year ago, at least through the first half of next year.” In November, small-car sales dropped 30.3 percent compared with November 2007, to 89,306 units. While that’s not quite as bad as the overall market’s plunge, it pushed the segment into a small year-on-year decline the first 11 months. “All car lines have been down since gasoline has gone down,” said Texas dealer Tom Durant, whose store in Grapevine, Texas, is the top-selling Chevrolet dealership in the United States. “You’re seeing Honda and Toyota take their hits, too.” The large-pickup segment was down less than the overall market in November, off 29.3 percent year-onyear to 101,109.
