Ford manufacturing chief Joe Hinrichs announced the freeze to North American plant managers and controllers in a Sept. 23 memo obtained by Automotive News. It is unclear whether the freeze will last past year end. Ford spends from $10 million to $20 million a month for industrial materials at its North American factories, Hinrichs noted in the memo. Those materials include oils, lubricants, cleaning supplies and cutting tools. Hinrichs said Ford plants have cut the use of factory supplies, but not as quickly as this year’s vehicle sales decline would mandate. He exempted safety-related equipment and “critical production” materials from the freeze. “The company’s present financial condition requires us to re-examine and question all aspects of the materials we purchase and use within manufacturing,” Hinrichs wrote. Ford spokesman Todd Nissen said the memo went to about 30 assembly and powertrain plants in North America.
