Porsche management is probably blowing the German equivalent of raspberries to the pessimists who said they could not sell an SUV. The Cayenne has been a big success. Next up for Porsche is the Panamera, a four-door, front-engine sedan. Naysayers are out again, saying it will hurt the brand’s sports car image. The Panamera will debut next year in a field that eventually will include fourdoor, coupe-styled models from Aston Martin and Lamborghini. The Cayenne is entering the end of its life cycle, and Porsche keeps rolling out special editions with hefty price tags. The latest is the Transsyberia, a rich man’s version of the rally model for nearly $72,000. Not a bad profit for an SUV with a base price of $43,000. Meanwhile, the formidable 911 un- CARPIX Sporty enough? Porsche’s four-door Panamera goes on sale next year. derwent a freshening that should keep sales buoyant for three or four years. Boxster: Once the darling of the Wall Street junior executive set at bonus time, the Boxster is now Porsche’s slowest seller. As bonuses dried up, so did sales. Another factor is that the Boxster is nearly 12 years old and looks essentially unchanged. Unlike the 911, whose buyers prefer only mild changes to the sheet metal, the Boxster crowd wants the latest, newest and flashiest. But Porsche likes subtle, gradual change. A restyling is expected for 2010. But in true Porsche fashion, the styling change will be evolutionary, not revolutionary. Cayman: A restyling is planned for 2010. 911: The Carrera and Carrera S Coupe and convertibles receive a freshening this year. Although the 3.6- and 3.8-liter displacements are unchanged for the six-cylinder engines, those engines are lighter. The 3.6-liter also gets a 20-hp boost to 345 hp, and the S with the 3.8-liter increases to 385 hp. Porsche has replaced its Tiptronic semiautomatic transmission with a seven-speed, double-clutch transmission called Porsche Doppelkupplung or PDK. Panamera: Porsche is calling its upcoming premium sports sedan a coupe because of the low greenhouse and coupelike design to the C-pillar. The styling execution was inspired by the Mercedes-Benz CLS, which also is a four-door four-seater. Sales begin next year. The front-engine, rear-drive Panamera will be powered by a 300-hp, 3.6liter V-6 from Volkswagen — the same engine in the base Cayenne. The higher-performance S model is expected to have Porsche’s 4.8-liter V-8 with about 400 hp. A turbocharged version of that engine probably will pump out more than 500 hp. All-wheel drive is likely on the V-8 model. In 2010, Porsche will add a hybrid powertrain it is developing with the Volkswagen group. The hybrid is expected to reduce fuel consumption 30 percent. Porsche is considering a diesel engine and a targa top for the Panamera. Cayenne: This year, Porsche adds more horsepower to the Cayenne with the Turbo S — a model with a 4.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine producing 550 hp. To go with the added power, Porsche has thrown on the glitz with bodywork and a hefty price tag of $124,575, including shipping. The S Transsyberia has the 405-hp, 4.8-liter V-8 from the Cayenne GTS and an active-management suspension. It debuted at this year’s Paris show. A gasoline hybrid was due out this year. The technology was not ready, and Porsche now says the vehicle will launch in late 2009 or early 2010. Porsche is expected to redesign the Cayenne in 2010. c BRAKE ENGINEERING THAT STOPS A SPEEDING BULLET Japan’s Shinkansen 300 km/h N700 Series “Bullet Trains” depend on Akebono brakes.
