Thomas Weber, head of r&d at Daimler and its Mercedes-Benz Cars subsidiary, says the auto industry faces huge cost pressures as it develops mass-market electric vehicles and tries to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from diesel- and gasolinepowered cars. He called for the industry to avoid costly duplication of r&d as it moves toward the electrical era. FISITA is the international association of automotive engineers. Klaus Draeger, BMW board member responsible for development, said the cost of developing the technology for new electric vehicles may be more than what individual automakers can afford. “The race to use less crude oil is a major challenge, but we need to share the burden between all parties. This is not just an auto industry issue,” Draeger said. Weber and Draeger see technical challenges and solutions involved in developing full-electric vehicles. Therefore, they support the early creation of industrywide component standards for suppliers to prevent duplication of development of major components such as battery packs. Michael Paul, ZF Friedrichshafen’s chief technical officer, said the auto industry needs more international coop- eration among engineers. He believes that if engineers shared their findings it would result in the faster, more-efficient development of common standards for components, which could be customized by individual automakers. Paul said that FISITA is well-positioned to be a leader in the drive to create greater harmonization of pollution regulations and technical standards. Daimler’s Weber also said that emissions laws in Europe, the United States and emerging markets such as China should be harmonized to a common global standard. “At the moment,” he said, “they are different, and we need to say: ‘This is nonsense.’ ” c EATON CORP. — Gary Klasen, 55, to vice president of external communications. IAC, with Asian headquarters in Shanghai, produces interior and exterior components, instrument panels and headliner systems. Hella will supply BMW 7 series LIPPSTADT, Germany — Hella KGaA Hueck & Co. will supply a lane-changing warning system for the redesigned BMW 7 series, which goes on sale this year. The system warns drivers who have turned on their turn signal while traveling at more than 30 mph if any vehicles are in the lane beside them or in their blind spot. The warning triggers a light around the side mirror and causes the steering wheel to vibrate. Hella, of Lippstadt, makes lighting and electronic systems.
