Now that the Internet is migrating into the car, telematics service provider ATX Group says it’s time to create an Internet domain just for the vehicle: .car. ATX and the Connected Vehicle Trade Association also are calling for the formation of a working group to set standards for how drivers and passengers can access Internet content safely. The group would include automakers, suppliers, technology firms and content providers. The standards would apply to built-in and mobile Internet devices. “We’re just trying to get the ball rolling more than anything,” said ATX Vice President Gary Wallace. It’s a given that people are going to use the Internet in the car, he said. “Now it’s a case of how do we embed it in a vehicle and make it safe.” ATX, of Dallas, provides subscription-based telematics services. The working group would examine issues such as what kind of content should be accessible, how it would be displayed, the use of speech technology, firewalls, viruses and minimizing driver distraction. The Connected Vehicle Trade Association and ATX are planning an industry forum in October in Detroit. Scott McCormick, president of the trade group, said automakers need technologies that drivers can activate or respond to within two seconds.
