Automotive News - November 3, 2008 - (Page 16) 16 • NOVEMBER 3, 2008 ADVERTISING STAFF Half-termarket Marketing Worldwide makes spoilers, running boards and interior trim packages. Here’s how it works with Toyota to turn aftermarket options into factory options. 1. Marketing Worldwide ships parts and installation manuals to Toyota’s vehicle processing centers for cars coming off the ship or out of the automaker’s North American assembly plants. 2. Toyota employees install the parts. 3. Toyota’s involvement ensures the manufacturer’s warranties remain valid. Last year, U.S. customers bought $38.1 billion worth of auto accessories, the Specialty Equipment Market Association reports. The annual SEMA show in Las Vegas, to be held Tuesday through Friday this year, is a magnet for dealers and others. But consumer fears about spotty workmanship and voided warranties continue to dog the aftermarket. Marketing World- wide designs, engineers and manufactures customized original equipment and works directly with automakers. Marketing Worldwide says its delivery model doesn’t compromise quality or workmanship. The company, known as MWW, makes exterior equipment such as rear spoilers, front grilles, running boards, body panels, stainless-steel door sills and performance exhaust systems. Its interior systems include custom trim packages, seat heater systems, iPod interfaces and adaptive lighting systems. For the past eight years, MWW has delivered its products to Toyota Motor Corp.’s vehicle processing centers, where vehicles are checked after they come off the ship or the North American assembly line. The MWW products are installed by Toyota technical teams before the vehicles reach the dealership, Rainer Poertner, executive vice president of MWW, said in a telephone interview. MWW trains the teams and supplies installation manuals, but Toyota employs the workers. Installation carried out this way retains the Toyota warranties because Toyota oversight assures adherence to quality standards. Poertner said the logistics of custom installation are too complicated for automakers to do at the factory. Doing it in the vehicle processing center benefits the customer, the automaker and MWW, he said. Rick Greer Director of Sales and Marketing rgreer@crain.com 313-446-6050 Kathleen C.
