Automotive News - November 3, 2008 - (Page 36) 36 • NOVEMBER 3, 2008 Ford and GM jockey for steel discounts Robert Sherefkin and David Barkholz rsherefkin@crain.com DETROIT — General Motors and Ford Motor Co. appear to be putting off until the last minute their bulk purchases of steel to take advantage of rapidly falling prices. Falling vehicle production in North America and the consumer shift to smaller vehicles are depressing steel prices, analyst Charles Bradford says. This is the season for GM and Ford to negotiate steel contracts. The deadline is the end of the year, when most of their contracts expire. But this year, GM and Ford are tak- ing negotiations slow to lock in the best possible prices, says Bradford, a metals analyst with Soleil Securities Inc., of New York. Tumbling coils The spot prices for commoditygrade, hot-rolled coil steel have tumbled in recent weeks. In July, they were $1,060 a ton, but they fell to $600 this month, Bradford says. During that slide, the price fell $95 a ton in a single week. Automakers are major buyers of higher-grade coated steels for body panels and typically buy at lower contract prices. The automakers declined to comment on their steel-buying strategies. Alan McCoy, a spokesman for AK Steel Holding Corp., says the company does not discuss customer sales. It’s unclear how Chrysler LLC is handling steel purchases. The automaker’s annual steel buy is much less than GM’s planned global purchase of 6 million tons for 2009. Steel makers are preparing for tougher times. Last week, for example, AK Steel warned of difficult times ahead, even as it posted record thirdquarter earnings. The company was tight-lipped about its 2009 outlook. Automakers are “recovering from cardiac arrest” after ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel maker, this year demanded a $500-a-ton increase from its North American automaker customers, Bradford says. AK Steel appears to be trying to bring supply in line with demand with its fourth-quarter plans to cut steel shipments by 11 percent year over year to about 1.4 million tons, says Clark Blake, a debt analyst with Gimme Credit Inc., of New York. Auto-share declines McCoy says AK Steel has cut automotive sales from 60 percent of its total sales five years ago to about 30 percent today. In 2007, automotive sales were 40 percent of the integrated steel maker’s $5.92 billion in sales. About 10 percent of AK Steel’s sales last year came from GM. Last week, AK Steel reported that third-quarter earnings jumped 73.7 percent to $188.3 million, as higher prices for steel overcame weaker demand from automotive, appliance and construction markets. The West Chester, Ohio, company said sales rose 25.3 percent to $2.16 billion. It reported a “richer shipment mix, higher contract and spot-market pricing, and increases in raw material and energy surcharges.” c ■ 50 with Chevrolet Kermit Hicks of Hicks Chevrolet-Buick in Greencastle, Pa., receives a 50-year award for Chevrolet from General Motors.
