The minitruck would have the same petite platform as the i MiEV but a body designed to handle cargo, Masuko told Automotive News. The commercial electric vehicle will be ready for launch next year. But initial volume will be limited by the supply of lithium ion batteries needed to power its motor, he said. “We intend to take this worldwide,” Masuko said in an interview here last week. “There’s a global need for commercial vehicles for small shops and delivering mail or packages.” Mitsubishi Motors Corp. plans to start selling its bubble-shaped, four- seat i MiEV electric passenger car in Japan next summer. The company is banking on electric vehicles to help it leapfrog bigger rivals that have focused on gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles as their green-car strategy. Speaking through an interpreter, Masuko said electric vehicles could make up 10 percent of the global auto market by 2020. But electrics will remain relegated to short-range city runabouts because of limitations in battery technology, he said. That makes them ideally suited as fleet vehicles for delivery companies. Such vehicles have predictable driving patterns and short ranges and return to a common garage for recharging. The passenger version of the i MiEV is slated for annual sales of 2,000 units in Japan. Mitsubishi plans to eventually take that car to the United States and Europe.c To match Toyota, Nissan offers 0% loans NASHVILLE — Nissan North America Inc. is joining rival Toyota in providing 0 percent financing to revive U.S. auto sales. Nissan Division is offering 0 percent factory financing on five models: the Altima, Rogue, Sentra, Versa and Murano. The 36-month loans, which end Jan. 5, require good credit ratings. In addition, while some automakers’ finance arms have abandoned leasing, Nissan is offering factory-subsidized $199-a-month leases on the Altima sedan and Rogue crossover while extending a $339-a-month lease offer on the newly redesigned Maxima sedan. As a third measure, on Nov. 18 the brand will introduce a lower-priced version of its Versa sedan with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $10,685 — about $3,000 less than existing versions.
