Hall, President & CEO TOKYO — Japanese auto sales slid in the second quarter, but domestic production still kept up a healthy clip thanks to robust exports to emerging markets, especially Asia. Total light-vehicle sales fell 2.2 percent to 1,194,708 in the April-to-June period compared with the same three months of last year. Imports took a bigger hit than domestic brands. Toyota Motor Corp. and Suzuki Motor Corp. were the only homegrown automakers to eke out sales gains — 1.7 percent for Toyota and 0.8 percent for Suzuki. Lexus sales took a 19.4 percent tumble to 6,045 vehicles in the quarter as high gasoline prices sapped demand for luxury cars. On a company basis, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. posted the worst performance with a 14.6 percent sales decline to 39,209 vehicles. Despite the weak market, auto production climbed 5.5 percent in the quarter to 2,877,165 units. Keeping the Japanese factories humming was an 11.5 percent jump in exports to 1,707,360. Nissan Motor Co. and Mazda Motor Corp. posted the biggest production increases and also led the pack in boosting exports. Nissan’s output increased 38.2 percent to 317,943 vehicles, while its exports climbed 54.9 percent to 185,821. Asia was the hot growth destination. Exports there rose 33.8 percent in the quarter to 143,594 units. But the figure still paled when compared with European and North American shipments. Even with the U.S. market struggling, Japanese exports to North America squeezed out a 7.9 percent increase in the quarter to 608,061 vehicles.
