Automotive News - August 25, 2008 - (Page 40) 40 • AUGUST 25, 2008 Collectors revive GM classics PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — General Motors’ 100-year anniversary was celebrated here with a display of 20 of the automaker’s “cars of the future.” Many of the cars were the stars of GM’s Motorama, an event staged primarily in the 1950s to highlight the automaker’s styling and engineering expertise. On display last week at the Concours d’Elegance, an annual show of collectors’ cars, were such favorites as the turbinepowered 1954 Firebird XP-21 and the 1959 Corvette Sting Ray Racer Special. That Corvette introduced styling cues later seen on the 1963 Sting Ray. Several of the cars on display were found in junkyards, discarded by GM decades ago. They were brought back to life by car enthusiast Joseph Bortz, of Highland Park, Ill., who was honored by the Concours committee. Of the 20 cars displayed, Bortz owns five, including the 1953 Buick Wildcat I and 1954 Pontiac Bonneville Special. The restored 1953 Corvette EX 122 prototype — essentially the first Corvette — turned heads at the show. “It was shown at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel as part of Motorama,” says Ed Welburn, GM’s design vice president. “It toured the circuit for a year or two. Then it became an engineering vehicle back at the proving grounds where they tested the V-8 for the Corvette. “And after a couple of years, it was no longer needed, and they just sold it to an employee. That employee let his daughter commute to Michigan State (University) in that car.” On Sept. 15, Automotive News will publish a GM 100th anniversary special edition, How General Motors Changed the World. The 1954 Pontiac Bonneville Special hints at a possible Chevrolet Corvette competitor. It never happened. This car still has its original paint.
