Automotive News - May 26, 2008 - (Page 16) 16 • MAY 26, 2008 ADVERTISING STAFF ‘Boss Ket,’ Connery inspire Tim Jackson T inkering is in Tim Jackson’s blood. Tenneco Inc.’s chief technology officer was born in Kettering, Ohio, a stone’s throw from where General Motors engineering legend Charles “Boss Ket” Kettering grew up. Jackson was such a natural that at age 13, officials at his school hired him to change the combinations on the lockers. “It was technical and mathematical and it was very precise,” he said. “I did 1,000 lockers in three weeks.” Jackson spends all day working with engineers and dealing with complex technical issues, then relaxes by building custom motorcycles in his garage. Name: Tim Jackson Title: Chief technology officer, Tenneco Inc. Age: 51 Personal life: Married, three grown children Works: Tenneco North American Emission Control Technical Center, Grass Lake, Mich. Education: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Rose- No Country for Old Men. What’s the last book you’ve read? From cover to cover? A history of Harley-Davidson. Why do you work on mechanical things in your spare time? During the day, I am a leader of people and teams of people. It’s all about communication and motivation and teamwork. When I go home, it’s all about working with my hands and actually doing my own calculation or design. It takes me back to the kinds of things I did and loved as an entry-level engineer at General Motors 30 years ago. What vehicle do you wish you designed? The Harley-Davidson V-Rod. It captures the essence of HarleyTenneco’s Tim Jackson: “I like Connery so much as Bond that my firstborn son is named Sean.” Davidson. It allows you to ride with the best of the Japanese and German motorcycles. The car I wish I could have designed is the new Mustang. I learned to drive in a candy apple red 1966 Mustang with a pony interior. What is your greatest extravagance? My Harley-Davidson collection. We have eight with two more under construction. The best film you’ve seen this year? Who’s your favorite character in fiction? I’m a James Bond nut. We own all of the films going back to the beginning. Daniel Craig (the new blond Bond) is the closest to Sean Connery of any. Sean Connery was the epitome. I like Connery so much as Bond that my firstborn son is named Sean. What was the most fun you had last year that had nothing to do with the auto industry? Snowmobiling vacations with my family. What gets your goat? People whose very first words are why they can’t do things and why things won’t work. I don’t like it when people kill innovation. — Richard Truett Nissan to make lithium ion batteries Stop Sending Money Out The Door! Initial output will be 13,000 units a year. But the company expects total production to climb to 65,000 by 2011, with the batteries going to its electric and hybrid cars. Nissan wants to use the batteries in electric vehicles it plans to bring to the United States and Japan in 2010, as well as those eyed for use in Israel and Denmark in 2011. Nissan aims to sell electric vehicles worldwide by 2012. Lithium ion batteries are lighter and more powerful than nickel-metal Carlos Tavares: Nissan is moving “as fast as we can.” hydride batteries now used in hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Prius. Their arrival is expected to jumpstart the market for zero-emission electric vehicles and better hybrids. “We are going directly to zero-emissions vehicle positioning, and we are trying to go there as fast as we can,” Nissan Executive Vice President Carlos Tavares said here last week. Other companies, including Toyota Motor Corp. and General Motors, plan to roll out vehicles with lithium ion batteries starting in 2010. But Nissan is among the first to an- nounce mass producing the batteries, which have been dogged by technical and cost hurdles. The batteries will be made by Automotive Energy Supply Corp., a joint venture set up last year by Nissan, electronics giant NEC Corp. and NEC Tokin Corp. Automotive Energy Supply uses thin, sheetlike laminated cells with manganese cathodes. The flat shape makes the batteries more space-efficient than cylindrical alternatives, and the use of manganese makes them less prone to overheating than cobaltbased batteries, the company says. Automotive Energy Supply President Masahiko Otsuka plans to bring down costs through volume production. Senior Vice President Minoru Shinohara said depending on their use, Nissan’s lithium ion batteries will offer vehicles a range up to 124 miles on a single charge. c Rick Greer Director of Sales and Marketing rgreer@crain.com 313-446-6050 Kathleen C. Logistics officials at Mitsubishi’s Normal, Ill., plant say the practice could cut transportation costs. “There is a potential here for less expense, which is going to become a bigger issue as fuel prices rise,” said Tom Spangler, general manager for logistics for Mitsubishi’s procurement and supply operations. The truck-sharing concept, called “freight-mingling,” has been discussed but not implemented elsewhere in the U.S. auto industry. The Normal plant operates at less than half of its 150,000-unit annual capacity. U.S. suppliers who previously filled trucks with Mitsubishi parts now must either ship partial loads to Normal or consolidate shipments into trucks that run on a less efficient schedule. Caterpillar has a plant in Peoria, just 30 miles from Normal. Caterpillar also has a global freight logistics company, Caterpillar Logistics Services Inc., that is based in nearby Morton, Ill. Two years ago, Mitsubishi turned over management of its inbound North American materials to Caterpillar Logistics. But whether to use Caterpillar supplier trucks to pick up Mitsubishi parts and drop them off in Normal on their way to Peoria is a complex next step, Spangler says. “We’re in two significantly different product lines,” he says. “They make http://www.autonews.com http://www.autonews.com http://www.msst.us http://WWW.AUTONEWS.COM http://www.msst.us http://www.autonews.com/subscribe.htm http://www.nitrofill.com http://www.autonewseurope.com http://www.automobilwoche.de
