BMW Expires July 31. 2008 models 3 series, 5 series, 6 series, 7 series, M5, M6, X3, X5 Z4, Z4 M Fleming was a consummate newspaperman DETROIT — Al Fleming, who was industry editor of Automotive News from 1981 to 1993, died July 19. He was 78. As industry editor, Fleming was responsible for this newspaper’s supplier coverage. But he did much more than that. He covered major stories and was a columnist of note. Fleming was an automotive writer for 45 years. Before joining Automotive News, he was with Ward’s AutoWorld and Ward’s Automotive Reports, Autoproducts, Iron Age and The Royal Oak (Mich.) Daily Tribune. From 1975 to 1978, he achieved the dream of many newspeople: He owned his own publication, Car Biz. Fleming was a complete newspaperman. He was a reporter, a writer and an editor. But it was as a columnist that Fleming is best remembered. He had a way with words and a way with columns. His columns were humorous, sometimes with a bite, but never nasty or mean-spirited. He was not that kind of writer. When his column appeared, it was common for auto people to greet each other with “Did you read Fleming today?” It was always asked with a smile. Fleming enjoyed golf and bridge. At the first, he was a hacker. At the second, with Alice, his partner and wife of 47 years, he was more than just pretty good. Fleming was a quiet, gentle man. He didn’t yell or rant and rave. I worked close to him for 12 years, and I can’t recall that he ever raised his voice. He was a radio personality. From 1972 to 1997, he broadcast his “Auto Report” five days a week on Detroit station WWJ-AM. He also wrote a book — titled, aptly, Adventures in Autoland. The homilist at his funeral service gave it a better title: Al’s Adventures in Autoland. Newspeople win awards sometimes, and Fleming received his share. But the award they value most is the respect of their peers, readers and listeners. Al Fleming had that. In spades. — John K. Teahen Jr. – – 0.9% 1.9% CHRYSLER LLC Expires July 31.
