Based on a schedule agreed on by both parties in U.S. District Court in Detroit, a trial will not begin until 2009. Under new CEO Bob Brockman, Reynolds sued GM in October, contending the automaker breached a 2005 contract for development of GM’s Integrated Dealer Management System. GM countersued. GM and Reynolds will be busy filing legal documents throughout this year. For example, both sides must begin lay depositions — that is, sworn testimony of witnesses — on June 1 and complete that process by Sept. 15. Reports from expert witnesses that they plan to use during the trial must be filed by Oct. 15. Meanwhile, GM won’t let Reynolds sell the Integrated Dealer Management System until the dispute is resolved. The system under dispute is a package of software, hardware and services assembled to GM’s specifications, then installed and maintained by Reynolds or one of three other approved vendors. The package is sold to dealers at a price negotiated by GM and the vendors. c JOE WILSSENS Toyota, Lexus and Scion dealers and their guests join guitarist John Cafferty on the dance floor during last year’s National Automobile Dealers Association convention in Las Vegas.
