Through September, U.S. sales of Sonata were down 1.9 percent, to 97,442 units. U.S. sales of the Santa Fe were down 19.1 percent for the first nine months, to 56,629 units. The factory was opened in 2005. Its annual production capacity is 300,000 vehicles. Through September, the factory built 195,278 vehicles in 2008. That’s down 2.7 percent from the same period in 2007, according to the Automotive News Data Center. c Hyundai Motor Co. is idling its Alabama factory 11 days this year because of reduced demand and a slumping economy. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama LLC said the 11 days, beginning Friday, Oct. 24, will be scheduled on Fridays and around Thanksgiving and Christmas. The reduced schedule remains subject to change as market conditions dictate, the company said. The Montgomery, Ala., factory builds all Sonata sedans and Santa Fe TOKYO — Starting in 2010, Japanese electronics giant Toshiba Corp. says it aims to make 3 million lithium ion vehicle battery cells a month. The goal is to penetrate the market for plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles. Battery packs for hybrid cars can contain hundreds of cells. Toshiba now makes 150,000 cells a month, mostly for electric bicycles. The company says its so-called SCiB lithium batteries are safer and recharge faster than conventional lithium ion batteries. A spokesman did not say how many cells would be required per vehicle because the number depends on the vehicle’s performance requirements. Toshiba plans to spend ¥20 billion ($196.5 million) to expand production to cars by 2010, the spokesman said. It will join the ranks of Japan’s Sanyo Electric Co., Panasonic EV Energy Co. and NEC Corp. in supplying lithium ion batteries to automakers. Toshiba says its batteries use a lithium-titanium oxide negative electrode. That makes the batteries more stable than typical lithium ion batteries using carbon-based negative electrodes. Toshiba’s variety generates less heat and reduces the risk of fire, the company says.
