Bolduc dbolduc@craincom.de ECHING, Germany — After five years of rapid growth, Denso Europe’s sales will stall in 2008. “This year will be very difficult,” Denso Europe President Shigehiro Nishimura told Automotive News Europe. That is bad news for parent Denso Corp. — which, after strong 2007 results from its European and AsiaOceania units, passed Robert Bosch GmbH to become No. 1 in the Automotive News ranking of the top 100 global suppliers. Nishimura blamed the company’s anticipated slowdown in Europe on the increasing cost of raw materials, the region’s weak new-car sales and static car production by its customers in Europe. “We are getting new business this year, but the increase is not very high,” he said in an interview at Denso Europe’s r&d center north of Munich. Denso Europe expects sales to be flat in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009, after a 19.4 percent increase to ¥620.3 billion ($6.2 billion) last year. Nishimura said Denso’s operating profit will rise about 5 percent. In its latest fiscal year, Denso Europe’s operating profit more than doubled to $265.0 million from $121.4 million. Nishimura listed four steps Denso Europe will take to cope with the rising costs of raw materials. Denso Europe’s Shigehiro Nishimura: “This year will be very difficult.” 1. Ask its suppliers to absorb some of the costs. 2. Change the size and specifications of some products to reduce the use of the materials. “For example, we will reduce the thickness of the plastic we use in air-conditioner systems without compromising the quality of the part,” Nishimura said. 3. Use materials more efficiently during production to avoid waste. 4. Recycle and reuse the waste from the materials. “We are trying to absorb as much of the cost increase as possible, but if it becomes too difficult, we have to start discussions with our customers on how to compensate us for the increase,” Nishimura said. Robert Bosch has said it passes on half of its material cost increases to customers; Continental AG says it aims to pass on one-third. When asked how much help Denso Europe gets from automakers, Nishimura said with a laugh: “I am sure it is not 100 percent.” c Vehicle interiors by IAC. Our heritage, your advantage.
