About 30 percent of the 1,070 workers added at Orion for a third shift are so-called Tier 2 workers, said Mike Dunn, shop chairman for UAW Local 5960, which represents workers at the plant. Tier 2 workers earn about half the $28 an hour paid to veteran workers and receive a fraction of the benefits. GM added a third shift in August to produce more Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 sedans. The new shift also helped clean out a local Jobs Bank of laid-off workers and contributed to the return of about 300 Delphi Corp. workers to GM over the past 18 months. Delphi was owned by GM until 1999. Orion’s employment now stands at about 3,800, Dunn said. Call Toll Free 1-800-958-0595 For Your FREE, No-Obligation Kit! A third shift was added in Orion Township, Mich., to build the Chevy Malibu, above, and the Pontiac G6. With the Tier 2 workers, Orion has lower labor rates to go along with the competitive products it builds, Dunn said. “The way the auto market is, this is one place creating jobs and bringing people back off layoff,” he said. Amid disastrous September vehicle sales, U.S. sales of the Malibu jumped 68.2 percent to 19,725. G6 sales tumbled 8.5 percent in September but are still up 8.4 percent in the first nine months of 2008 compared with the year-earlier period. The UAW’s concessionary contracts last fall with the Detroit 3 allowed the carmakers for the first time to hire entry-level workers at lower wages and benefits.c 254 Western Ave., Augusta, ME 04330 Call Toll Free 1-800-958-0595 “THE NEW CAR SALES EVENT COMPANY” Proud Member of the Better Business Bureau *Current Wolfington Group market areas excluded. http://www.clickhereforadvice.com http://www.ACSaccess.com http://www.ACSaccess.com http://www.purigen98.com/an http://www.purigen98.com/an
