The British 4x4 brand was once the vehicle of choice for NATO, the United Nations, the Red Cross and other humanitarian aid organizations. Recent ads showed Land Rovers being driven through Tokyo gridlock and compared driving them to tango dancing or parachuting into a cave. Awareness of Land Rover is at an all-time high, said Finbar McFall, Land Rover’s vice president of marketing. But he said not many people understand the history of the brand. The campaign will appear in print and on TV and billboards. The print and billboard ads will have tag lines such as “The official vehicle of very official things” and “Beautiful in ugly situations.” Some billboards will be mounted at an extreme tilt to emphasize Land Rover’s climbing prowess. A viral campaign features red tape wrapped around buildings, 2 feet above the ground. The tag line: “Whenever you are standing in something this deep, you need a Land Rover.” “The creative ideas were already there,” McFall said. “We didn’t need to create them.” The brand campaign will replace national and regional advertising for the LR2 and LR3 vehicles, said Chris Marchand, head of marketing and sales for Land Rover North America. Combining the vehicles in one campaign will cut through the clutter, he said. The campaign also is a quiet dig at newcomers to the luxury SUV world. “Not to be disingenuous,” said Marchand, “but the Mercedes ML350 heritage goes all the way back to the mid-’90s. We go back 60 years.”c Expires March 31.
