Clint Eastwood, Rob Lowe, Kelly Hu and other Hollywood stars teamed with Best Buddies International and Audi of America for the Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle. The 100-mile charity bicycle ride along the Pacific Coast Highway from Chateau Julien in Carmel, Calif., to the Hearst Castle Ranch in San Simeon, Calif., raised more than $3.5 million for people with intellectual disabilities. After the ride, participants celebrated with a cookout and concert at the Hearst Castle Ranch — during which Mike Cagle, Audi of America’s director of the western region, right, received a gift from Best Buddies founder Anthony Kennedy Shriver. Study: Car buyers turn green for different reasons Mary Connelly mconnelly@crain.com Car and truck buyers are increasingly receptive to environmental appeals, but automakers won’t reach them with a one-size-fits-all message, a new study suggests. According to the study by the Yahoo Web site, three out of four U.S. consumers call themselves “green.” But as that group grows, the study notes, buyers’ reasons for green purchases diverge. “Green consumers have been seen as a homogenous group,” said Lon Bollenbacher, Yahoo’s senior automotive director. “But not all green consumers are the same. It is not just a larger group of people but a more sophisticated group of consumers looking at this from multiple angles.” Survey respondents were more likely to say they would buy an environmentally friendly vehicle to prevent pollution than to save money on gasoline, Bollenbacher told Automotive News. Automotive marketers need to tailor their green messages to address diverse motivations, he said. Twelve percent of respondents who said they bought a new car or truck in the previous six months said they considered a green vehicle. An additional 6 percent said they bought vehicles they “believe are more green.” Among respondents who did not purchase a new vehicle within six months of the survey, three-fifths said they would consider buying a green vehicle. Erin Carlson, director of Yahoo For Good, a page on the Web site that promotes green behavior, said consumers want more information about environmentally friendly products. Less than one-fourth of survey respondents called themselves “overwhelmed” by data about green vehicles and other products, she said. Yahoo conducted the online survey in August. and polled 1,500 respondents who live in Los Angeles, Chicago and Portland, Ore. The sample was representative of all Internet users, Yahoo said. It said the margin of error for the automotive segment of the study was 3.5 percentage points. c Profits Delivered! MenuVantage delivers 30% more PVR right to your desktop! Deal after deal.
