Canada’s light-vehicle sales rose 1.5 percent in October compared with October 2007, to 122,756 units. Through the first 10 months of 2008, sales also rose 1.5 percent to 1,437,737 from the same period a year earlier. Last month, sales of General Motors brands fell 6.1 percent to 28,220. GM remained the best-selling manufacturer in Canada, despite a 9.4 percent sales jump by Toyota Motor Corp.’s brands. Toyota leapfrogged past Chrysler LLC and Ford Motor Co. into the No. 2 spot. Toyota’s sales rose to 15,843 from 14,484 a year earlier. Chrysler sales rose 2.1 percent to 15,731, paced by a 12.9 percent gain by Dodge to 10,522. On the other hand, Jeep sales dropped 16.6 percent. Sales by Ford’s brands fell 11.2 percent to 15,576. Rounding out the top five — and the only other carmaker to sell more than 10,000 vehicles in October — was Honda Motor Co. Its brands sold 11,455 vehicles, up 0.7 percent. — James B.
