VW is Europe's top seller Volkswagen was Europe's top -selling brand in th e first quarte r, with sales virtually flat compared with 2007 in a market that declined by 1.7 percen t overa ll. The VWbrand sold 403,617 unit s in the first qu arter , beatin g the runnerup Ford brand , which sold 354,970. General Motors' Opel/ Vauxhall brand ranked third , with 338,756 unit s, followed by the Ren ault brand , Peugeot and the Fiat brand. Among companies, Volkswagen AG was by far the top seller, with 783,152 un its in the quarter. But th at tot al was down from 804,436 in th e first q uarte r of 2007. The PSA group, wit h 535,743 sa les, was second, followed by Ford Motor Co., General Motor s and Ren ault . Rcnault was the on ly top-fi ve autornaker to post an increase in the qu arter, boosting sales by 1.6 percen t.
